Genetics and Environmental Sciences Camp

Overview
Recommended Ages / Upcoming grade level:
10-14 years old / 5th - 8th grade (As of Fall 2017)
Dates: June 19th - 23rd
Times: 9:00am – 2:00pm (Drop-off starts at 8:45am, Pick-up ends at 2:30pm)
Location: Canyon Crest Academy, Room C201 (Mr. Haas' room)
Rates: $350 per student - Register Now!
Includes: High school lab materials, camp t-shirt, advanced curriculum and worksheets 

The CCA San Diego team is proud to hold this summer camp with the purpose of nurturing interest in science among young students. We aim to teach intriguing ideas to students of this camp and encourage them to appreciate and love genetics and environmental sciences.

Summer Hours:
The Genetics and Environmental Sciences Camp will start June 19th and end June 23rd. More sessions may be opened up to accommodate students. ​Class sessions will start at 9:00am and end at 2:00pm, totaling 5 hours of fun daily!

Genetics Science Curriculum Brief Overview
  • Lay foundation of basic genetics and hereditary terminology
  • Gregor Mendel and his peas
  • Punnett squares/pedigrees
  • Sources of genetic variation/genetic diseases/gender-linked genes
  • DNA translation and transcription
  • Types of inheritance​​ 
Environmental Science Curriculum Brief Overview
  • Ecosystem levels/abiotic vs. biotic
  • Biological ecosystem interaction
  • Plants, photosynthesis, and their role in the food web
  • Artificial selection/agricultural applications
  • Environmental degradation and problems
  • Bioremediation and environmental remediation techniques
  • How to help the environment/DIY environmental safety packet​
Lab Technique Practiced
  • Running gel electrophoresis, PCR
  • Pipetting technique 
  • Mock transfection and transformation labs
  • Centrifuge from scratch
We will be performing a week-long project on mendelian genetics with mung bean plants and other science related projects, such as constructing a DNA double helix, ecological simulations, and learning lab techniques that most students won't otherwise learn until they study at a university! Science tools and t-shirts are also given!

Daily Outline

9:00am - Camp check-in and games
9:30am - Interactive lessons
10:00am - Laboratory application based on lesson
10:30am - Snacks and games
10:50am - Continue lab or lesson
11:15am - Lunch
12:00pm - Week long project time 
1:00pm - Introduction to a new lab technique 
2:00pm - Pick up time



Included Materials
  • Included laboratory materials for lab use: micropipettes, pH strips, tabletop centrifuges
  • Materials students may bring home:
    • Worksheets and lesson materials for all topics
    • Summer camp t-shirts
  • Snack is provided everyday (apples, crackers, etc.).
    • Lunch can be provided for $7 (you may select lunch options), but students may bring their own lunches (reduce waste!). We will be able to accommodate food allergies (gluten free, vegan, etc.)

Summer Camp Cost
The Genetics and Environmental Sciences Camp is $350 per student for the whole week.  All of the above materials are included.
